Azerbaijan records population increase
The population of Azerbaijan has continued to grow in the first months of 2026, AzerNEWS reports, citing the State Statistical Committee of Azerbaijan.
According to the report, the country’s population grew by 5,814 people, or 0.1 percent, since the beginning of the year, reaching 10,268,165 as of April 1, 2026.
At the same time, the return of former internally displaced persons to territories liberated from occupation continues under the state-backed Great Return initiative.
A total of 33,270 former internally displaced persons have returned to the liberated territories as of May 1, 2026. The returns are being carried out within the framework of the "First State Program on the Great Return to the Liberated Territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan," approved by Presidential Order No. 3587 dated November 16, 2022.
As a result, the total number of people living, working and studying in the liberated territories has reached 84,370.
The demographic statistics also show that 54.3 percent of Azerbaijan’s population lives in urban areas, while 45.7 percent resides in rural regions.
In terms of gender distribution, men account for 49.8 percent of the population, while women make up 50.2 percent.
