Nicaragua seeks Azerbaijani investment (UPDATE)

Foreign Minister of the remote Central American country, Nicaragua, Samuel Santos López is on two-day official visit to Azerbaijan.

President Ilham Aliyev received Lopez on July 9, AzerTag news agency reported.

Stressing the importance of the fact that Lopez`s visit to Azerbaijan was the first high-level trip from Nicaragua, President Aliyev expressed confidence that such visits would be intensified in the future.

Touching upon issues related to the development of bilateral relations between the two countries, President Aliyev said there were good opportunities for cooperation between Azerbaijan and Nicaragua in the political, economic, investment and other fields.

Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Lopez, in turn, expressed satisfaction with his first official visit to Azerbaijan.

He said ongoing rapid development processes in Azerbaijan made deep impression on him.

In a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, López called on Azerbaijan to invest in Nicaragua's economy.

Lopez and Elmar Mammadyarov discussed relations between Nicaragua and Azerbaijan, as well as ways of boosting cooperation in international organizations.

He called on Azerbaijan to invest in Nicaragua, which is primarily an agricultural country. Lopez also proposed holding permanent political consultations between the two countries.

The tourism is also one of the main sectors of Nicaragua.

Following the meeting, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Elman Abdullayev said the sides reached an agreement on laying the foundation of inter-ministerial consultations.

Lopez also visited the Alley of Honours to lay flowers at the tomb of national leader, founder and architect of modern Azerbaijani state Heydar Aliyev on July 9.

He then visited the Alley of Martyrs to commemorate Azerbaijani heroes who gave their lives for the country`s independence and territorial integrity. Lopez laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame monument.

Minister's visit to Azerbaijan will come to an end on July 10.
