UN chief backs efforts of Karabakh mediators
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his support to the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs during a meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian in Vienna, News Armenia reported with reference to the Armenian Foreign Ministry.
The sides also exchanged views on UN agenda issues.
In the context of discussions on events in Syria, the sides touched upon the problems faced by the civilian population, including the Syrian Armenians.
Nalbandian also met with OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier in Vienna. The two discussed issues on the OSCE agenda as well as the settlement process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Minister Nalbandian met with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi. Bilateral issues as well as regional and international problems were discussed.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented four U.N. Security Council resolutions on the liberation of Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
