Iran, UAE mull Middle East developments
Senior officials from Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
have exchanged views on bilateral relations and the latest
developments in the Middle East region, including the unrest in
Syria, Press TV reported.
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein
Amir-Abdollahian, who is on a three-nation tour of the Persian Gulf
region, held a meeting with UAE Minister of State for Foreign
Affairs Anwar Mohammed Qarqash on June 20.
The two officials discussed the Syrian issue and an international
conference on Syria, which is expected to be held in Geneva.
The unrest in Syria erupted over two years ago and many people,
including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel,
have been killed in the violence.
On May 7, Russia and the United States agreed in Moscow to convene
an international conference on Syria, which will serve as a
follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012.
Amir-Abdollahian and Qarqash further discussed visa issues as well
as problems facing Iranian nationals in the UAE.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister left Tehran on June 18 for the
United Arab Emirates on the first leg of his regional tour, which
will also take him to Kuwait and Oman.
In February, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi stressed the
significance of close cooperation among the Persian Gulf states in
order to maintain regional security and stability.
