The Ministry of Defense Industry of Azerbaijan and the French Thales Group may create a joint venture for the production of various types of detection and radar systems.

Thales Group is a multinational company that designs and builds electrical systems and provides services for the aerospace, defense, transportation and security market.

According to the ministry, its representative Farrukh Vazirov held discussions with the leadership of the Thales Group on the sidelines of the Paris Air Show 2019 in France.

The meeting discussed the establishment of a joint venture for the production of various types of detection and radar systems. Besides, the interlocutors also discussed the creation of a regional service center for the provision of maintenance and repair of Thales Group products, which are used in Azerbaijan and neighboring countries.

The ministry noted that the parties reached an agreement on the implementation of the next steps in the framework of the discussed projects.

The message also says that on the sidelines of the Paris Air Show 2019, the Defence Industry Ministry representative and French manufacturer of weapons and military equipment Nexter discussed issues of joint production of wheeled armored vehicles.

The meeting discussed the issues of establishing cooperation on joint production of wheeled armored vehicles at the production sites of the Defense Industry Ministry, and production and integration of various types of weapons on sea and air platforms in the field of robotics.

The parties determined a roadmap for the implementation of specified projects. In this regard, the sides agreed on a visit of Nexter experts to Azerbaijan in July to proceed the negotiations on projects.

It is noteworthy that Thales Group has established a solid position in Eurasia. In Azerbaijan, Thales Group supplies signaling solutions to the Purple line of Baku Metro.

Also, Thales Air Systems developed the TopSky system, a computerized air traffic control and management solution for Azerbaijan Airspace Supervision and Efficiency Center (ASEC).

Baku and Paris agreed to launch the ASEC in 2017 during President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to France. The total cost of the project, which is considered a pilot project for Thales, amounted to €7 million.

It is important to note that French Thales Group and Azerbaijan Airlines have been cooperating for more than 20 years.
