This year marks 124 years since the birth of a legendary figure in Azerbaijani music, Khan Shushinski, born Isfandiyar Djavanshir on August 20, in1901 in the historic town of Shusha, Azernews reports.

His voice, resonating with power and emotion, became the hallmark of Azerbaijani mugham, and his contributions to the cultural landscape of Azerbaijan continue to be celebrated today.

Shushinski's musical journey was shaped by his lineage and early exposure to music.

As the grandson of Panahali Khan, founder of the Garabagh Khanate, he was born into a family steeped in history and culture.

His mother, Begim Khanum, was also part of an influential family with ties to the Djavanshir dynasty. His musical training began at an early age, but it was his encounter with acclaimed mugham singer Islam Abdullayev that truly set his career in motion.

The defining moment of Shushinski's life came in 1918, during a wedding celebration in the village of Novruzlu.

While listening to a gramophone recording of Abulghasan Khan's "Kürdü Şahnaz," his teacher challenged him to perform the piece live.

Shushinski's flawless rendition of the mugham left everyone in awe, earning him the nickname Khan Shushinski, a title given by his proud teacher.

Over the years, Khan Shushinski refined his craft under the guidance of influential figures such as Jabbara Garayagdyoglu and Seyid Shushinski.

The mugham legend performed widely across Azerbaijan, captivating audiences with his exceptional range and profound interpretation of mugham.

His first performance in Baku in 1923 marked the beginning of a brilliant career that would see him become one of the most prominent musicians in Azerbaijan.

Khan Shushinski was not only a brilliant performer but also a gifted composer.

The mugham singer's songs, such as "Şuşanın dağları", "Ay gözəl", "Qəmərim", "Dağlarda çiçək" and many others, became integral parts of the Azerbaijani musical repertoire.

His ability to blend them with classical mugham created a unique sound that resonated with people from all walks of life.

Khan Shushinski's passing in 1979 marked the end of an era, but his influence endures.

Today, his recordings remain a treasured part of Azerbaijan's cultural heritage.
