Conservatives in Iran to choose one nominee for presidential elections
Conservatives in Iran will select one candidate, and support him
at the upcoming presidential elections in the country, Presidential
hopeful, top advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Akbar Velayati
said, IRIB News reported.
Answering a question, whether presidential hopeful, Tehran Mayor
Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf will step back in favor of Saeed Jalili,
Velayati declined to answer.
He said that he doesn't know who will be representing the
Conservatives in the end, however underscored that it will be one
candidate.
Velayati, along with Qalibaf and Gholam Ali Haddad-Adel are all
members of the Principlist Coalition of Three that participate at
the presidential elections in Iran.
Iran's Interior Ministry will announce the names of final
candidates for the upcoming presidential election on Wednesday, May
22.
Candidates can officially begin their electoral campaigns as of May
24 for a period of 20 days, one day ahead of the presidential and
city council elections.
Iran's presidential election will be held on June 14. The voters
will select the successor of the current President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the elections for
the third term according to the country's constitutional laws.
The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national
election and the Guardian Council vets the candidates for
qualifications.
