Kazakhstan, Trinidad and Tobago establish diplomatic ties

Kazakhstan's Permanent Representative to the UN Kairat Abdrakhmanov and Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the organization signed a joint communiqué on January 16, 2014 in New York on establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Kazakh Foreign Ministry reported that the meeting saw an exchange of views on the status and prospects of bilateral cooperation within the UN.

The sides noted the similarity in the stages of development of the two countries. The similarity is related to gaining independence, democratic development, participation in regional integration processes and tolerance of society.

The parties admitted the importance of expanding mutually beneficial contacts between the states, especially in the spheres of energy, trade, access to regional markets, tourism and education.

Interest was expressed in Kazakhstan's contribution to the development of the island state's cooperation with Central Asian countries, and the importance for Kazakhstan to export its goods and services to Latin American and Caspian Sea region was emphasized.

Kazakh Foreign Ministry said that the important issues of the UN agenda reflecting the interests of the two states were discussed. They include: the solution of problems of the countries which do not have access to sea, small island states, working out the goals of sustainable development, environmental protection and other issues.

Trinidad and Tobago is an island state located in the southern Caribbean Sea, with a population of over 1.3 million people. The country is a parliamentary republic, where the political system is based on the British model of parliamentary democracy. The main economic sectors are mining and processing of oil and natural gas. The country is the largest natural reservoir of asphalt in the world.

The country has been a member of the United Nations since September 18, 1962. The republic is also a member of the Organization of American States, the Caribbean Community, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Latin American Economic System, which brings together 26 countries of South America and the Caribbean basin.
