Azerbaijani cargo aircraft crashes in Afghanistan

A freight plane of Azerbaijan's Silk Way airline crashed in Afghanistan, killing seven of its nine crew members.

The incident occurred at about 18:30 Baku time upon taking off from the airport at the Afghan Dwyer airport May 18.

The rented aircraft AN-12 was managed by international crew. Among those on board were Uzbekistan national (captain), three Ukrainian and five Azerbaijani nationals.

Among survivors are 2 nationals of Ukraine Ganja Andrey Nikolayevich and Aliyev Ramzi Mamudovich. State of survivors was reported stable.

The State Civil Administration of Azerbaijan set up a commission to investigate the circumstances causing the incident. Committee chairman Mukhtar Kerimov and members of the committee have already left for the Dwyer airport.

Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry is currently in contact with Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry and the embassy in Baku, as well as Azerbaijan's embassy in Turkmenistan accredited in Kabul regarding the crash of an aircraft of Azerbaijan's Silk Way, Hikmat Hajiyev, spokesman for Azerbaijan's foreign ministry, told Trend

The AN-12 cargo aircraft that was leased from the Silk Way Company for carrying cargo inside Afghanistan has crashed in the country's Helmand province. Azerbaijan State Aviation Administration has already released a statement on a crash that happened in Afghanistan.

Silk Way Airlines is a cargo airline with its head office and flight operations at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku. It operates freight services linking Europe and Asia, as well as services for government and non-governmental organisations.
