New Azeri-populated region set up in Iran
A new province predominantly populated by Azerbaijanis has been
established in Iran.
A draft law on setting up the province, called Alburz, has recently been adopted in the Iranian parliament with a 144-41 vote. According to the law, Alburz is composed of three smaller regions, where mostly ethnic Azerbaijanis reside, located in the area of the Tehran province.
The town of Karac, with the population of more than 1 million, will be the center of the Alburz province.
Iran is home to about 30 million Azerbaijanis, or about 40 percent of the country’s population, which is predominantly Persian.*
