Turkmenistan eyes possibility of power export to Pakistan, Tajikistan

Prospective routes are becoming much more concrete for the Turkmen electricity export, in particular to Pakistan and Tajikistan, the Turkmen government reported on July 12.

The government further said that the export opportunities can be expanded thanks to the commissioning of the gas-turbine power plant with annual capacity of 254 megawatts in the Beyik Turkmenbashy district of Turkmenistan’s Lebap region.

The project was implemented by Turkey’s Calik Enerji.

Thus, the country’s eastern region becomes a base for the export of Turkmen electricity, primarily to Afghanistan, the territory of which can be used as a transit territory in the future.

In late June it was reported that Turkmenistan supplies electricity to Afghanistan on easy terms and makes efforts to increase the volume of its exports to the neighboring country.

Also there is an opportunity to increase the electricity volume exported to Afghanistan in the direction of Serhetabat-Herat-Turgundi from 200 million kilowatt hours to 400 million kilowatt hours.

Previously, the country’s energy ministry reported that the volume of electricity output amounted to 22.5 billion kilowatt per hour in 2015. Export volume to neighboring countries in this period was at the level of 3.2 billion kilowatt per hour.

Turkmenistan plans to increase its electricity output up to 27.4 and 35.5 billion kilowatt per hour by 2020 and 2030 respectively, according to the country’s power industry development plan.
