Turkmenistan ends construction of its section of TAT Railway

Turkmenistan has completed the construction of Atamyrat-Imamnazar section of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway, which lies in Turkmenistan.

Reaching Afghanistan’s borders, the country planns to start the work on construction of 3-kilometer long railway line running from Imamnazar to Akina settlement on Afghanistan’s territory.

The construction of Atamyrat-Imamnazar-Akina-Andkhoy railway (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan) becomes an important link in the international transport operations between the countries of Central Asia.

“Implementation of a number of joint infrastructure projects in Afghanistan will give a strong impetus to the further development of Afghanistan’s economy, allow to resolve the important social issues and ensure the population’s employment,” said the message.

The Turkmen government reported that the project envisages construction of two railway sections: 85-kilometer long Atamyrat-Imamnazar on Turkmenistan’s territory and 38-kilometer long section running from Imamnazar to Andkhoy settlement in Afghanistan.

The length of the Atamyrat-Imamnazar-Akina section is 88 kilometers, according to the message.

Currently, two railway bridges are under construction along the railway line. Moreover, the work on constructing two railway stations will start there.

Being developed as part of the Central Asia Regional Cooperation Program The TAT railway, has an estimated cost of $1.5-2 billion is.

The 400 km-length railway is primarily financed by the Asian Development Bank, which has allocated $350 million to Afghanistan for its 37-mile section between Akina and Andho.

The project holds significant importance for creating new regional and inter-regional transport and communication corridors in Turkmenistan, and is of strategic, political and economic importance for all participating countries.

This trans-regional railroad project is likely to increase trade turnover.

The project expands regional infrastructures, connects landlocked countries with seaways, and opens a new corridor between Central Asia and world markets through seaports on the coast of the Indian Ocean that will halve the distance to the Baltic Sea coast via Russia.

The TAT railway project is expected to be fully operational by 2018.
