Obama: Azerbaijan is critical partner in reflection nuclear smuggling
Azerbaijan is a critical partner in reflection nuclear
smuggling.
The U.S. President Barack Obama made a statement as part of the
press conference following the 4th Nuclear Security Summit.
“Azerbaijan, like many countries that participated, has already
taken a number of steps. Each country has put forward a national
action plan. There are some countries that have stockpiles of
highly enriched uranium and they agreed get rid of it. There are
other countries with civilian nuclear facilities but do not have
necessary security practices. So they adopted better security
practices. There are countries that could potentially be transit
points for smuggling of nuclear materials so they worked with us on
border controls and detection. And because of Azerbaijan’s location
it is a critical partner in this process,” Obama said.
He also pointed out that the focus of this summit was the securing
of nuclear materials and making sure that they don't fall in the
hands of terrorists.
The Nuclear Security Summit, which was held on March 31-April 1,
was aimed at providing a forum for leaders to engage with each
other and reinforce commitment at the highest levels to securing
nuclear materials. This global event brought together leaders of
more than 50 nations. Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev also
attended the summit.
