Azerbaijan's Shakhriyar Mammadyarov has celebrated victory in the World Rapid Chess Championship.

On the last day Mammadyarov won five games in a row and defeated Russian chess grandmaster Ernesto Inarkiev in the 15th round. He finished the tournament with 11.5 out of 15 points.

At the closing ceremony Mammadyarov said he was very glad to become FIDE World Rapid Chess Champion at the tournament held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

"This is my sixth visit to Khanty-Mansiysk and I won the tournament in Ugra the first time. I hope to continue this good tradition during my next visit as well," he said.

Mammadyarov represented Azerbaijan at the Chess Olympiads in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010. In 2009, he won a gold medal for Azerbaijan in European Team Chess Championship, having won a bronze medal in 2007 and silver in 2011.

The closing ceremony was the final event of the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. Khanty-Mansiysk was the center of world chess for six days. Representatives of 18 countries of the world were contesting the titles in one of the world's best chess complexes, Ugra Chess Academy.

Silver and bronze went to Russian grandmasters Yan Nepomniachtchi and Alexander Grischuk accordingly.

Nepomniachtchi was leading after two days with 2 points ahead of his competitors. But he lost to Grischuk in round 13 and could not bring down the resistance of Alexander Riazantsev in the last round. As a result, he ranked second half a point behind the winner.

Grischuk became the bronze winner with 10.5 out of 15 points. He drew a game with Nikita Vityugov in round 15.

Rapid chess is a chess game in which each side is given less time to make their moves than under the regular tournament time controls of 60 to 180 minutes per player.

The World Rapid Chess Championship was organized under the aegis of FIDE for the second time. The championship took place on June 6-8 in Khanty-Mansiysk.
