The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced that global sea surface temperatures have reached record levels and will increase further. Turkiye is among the 5 countries where record temperatures can be seen.

It was stated that sea surface temperatures reached record levels in May, June and July, and the temperature records experienced in recent months will increase with the effect of El Nino weather conditions.

Temperatures can exceed 40 degrees in Spain, France, Greece, Croatia and Turkiye.​

Red Alert Issued For 10 Cities

In Italy, a red alert has been issued for ten cities, including Florence and Rome.

It is estimated that the temperature can reach 48.8 degrees here. A man in his 40s died in the north of the country on Tuesday.

Italian media reported that the man who painted the asphalt for a pedestrian crossing in the city of Lodi passed out and died in the hospital where he was taken.

Italian politician Nicola Fratoianni shared the situation with the message "We are facing an unbearable heat wave".

Referring to the death incident in Lodi, Fratoianni noted that it is time to act to prevent tragedies that may occur during the hottest hours.

There are reports that tourists in the country also pass out due to heat stroke.

48.8 Degrees On The Island Of Sicily

Italian media named the heatwave Cerberus, based on a character in Dante's Inferno.

Since the air temperatures in Europe began to be recorded, the highest value was detected in Italy.

In Syracuse on the island of Sicily, thermometers measured 48.8C in August 2021.

In Turkiye, the Meteorology Agency warned that for the week of July 12-18, "It is estimated that the seasonal normals will be 5 to 10 degrees higher in the Southern and Western parts, and 2 to 6 degrees higher in other regions".

Accordingly, the temperature may reach 44 degrees in Antalya on Friday.

It Is Estimated That 60,000 People Died Last Year

It is estimated that 60 thousand people died in Europe last year due to complications related to the heat wave.

According to Karsten Haustein from the University of Leipzig, this month could be recorded as the hottest month in history:

“By the hottest month in history, we mean the hottest month in the last 120,000 years. Temperatures will drop a bit in the Southern Hemisphere over the next few days, but we're likely to see warmer days in July and August as El Niño strengthens."
