EU still believes in Nabucco implementation

The European Commission still believes that Nabucco gas pipeline project, which lost in a competition to transport Azerbaijani gas to Europe, could be constructed.

The EU diplomats note that the Nabucco West and Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) are in the list of the projects considered significant to more than one EU nation and entitled to accelerated planning approval as well as consideration for money from the EU budget, Reuters reported.

The final list is expected to be published next month.

The officials of the Commission refused to disclose the content of the list before publication.

At the same time, according to the diplomats, Russia's South Stream project is not included in the list.

TAP is designed to transport gas from the Caspian region via Greece and Albania and across the Adriatic Sea to southern Italy and then to Western Europe. The gas which will be produced in the second phase of Azerbaijani Shah Deniz gas and condensate field, is considered as the main source of the project.

The Shah Deniz Consortium announced its choice of the TAP project in late June as a gas transportation route to the European markets.

However, Nabucco West project hasn't lost its importance, neither for Azerbaijan nor for Europe.

Earlier, Azerbaijani Industry and Energy Minister Natig Aliyev said that the Nabucco West gas pipeline project has not lost its significance and can still be implemented.

"These two projects, Nabucco West and the Trans-Adriatic gas pipeline have different goals and the choice of TAP does not exclude implementation of Nabucco," Aliyev said.

EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger also noted that both Nabucco West and Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) projects are needed in the medium term.
