Radiation map to be created in Azerbaijan

Implementation of a new project to study background radiation in Azerbaijan is planned, Director of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Institute of Radiation Problems Adil Garibov said on July 9.

Changes in the radiation background on the country's territory will be studied during this research. Helicopters will be used for measurement both in the air and on the ground. On the basis of this data, a map of background radiation will be compiled.

According to Garibov, there is no problem with radiation in any of Azerbaijan's regions. However, after preparation of the map the situation with the radiation background will be clearer.

"Azerbaijan has no problems with radiation. In some regions the radiation background is a little higher, and in some others a little lower, but in general, in all places, it is two times below the norm. We have not found a zone dangerous from the viewpoint of radiation so far," he said.

If in the course of the project increased radiation background is detected in any zone, the reasons will be identified, and water and soil from that area will be taken for tests.

"I do not believe that Azerbaijan can be dangerous in terms of radiation. But anyway the causes of [potential] excessive radiation background will be revealed. This project may also be of interest from the strategic point of view, because during the studies some deposits of radioactive material can be found," Garibov said.

According to Garibov, though Azerbaijan is not a hazardous area from the viewpoint of radiation, studies with the help of modern equipment are a positive step.

According to the Institute director, preparations are underway for the launch of the project, which along with ANAS will involve other government agencies.

"For the purpose of the project's implementation experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency are paying visits to Azerbaijan. Expensive equipment and mapping system are required for this project. Therefore, it is necessary that all experts of the country get together."

The project will involve relevant organizations of the State Committee on Standardization, Metrology and Patents of Azerbaijan and the Institute of Radiation Problems. The Ministry of Emergency Situations will be the leading entity in the project, Garibov added.
