Iran calls for national dialogue to end Syria crisis

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili in a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday asked for a political solution to the Syrian crisis, and expressed the hope that during his visit to the Muslim country he could persuade all groups to attend a broad-based national dialogue meeting, Iranian Fars news agency reported.

Jalili said, "Iran supports an all-out national dialogue in Syria."

President Assad and Jalili discussed Syria's recent developments and also the solutions to the Muslim country's crisis.

Jalili said he hoped that during his visit he would succeed in convincing Syrian groups to take part in national dialogue.

Besides, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani once more reiterated Tehran's support for a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the crisis in Syria.

"Since the outset of unrests in Syria some two years ago, we have repeatedly declared the Islamic Republic's support for the promotion of democracy in Muslim countries," Larijani said, addressing an open session of the parliament on Sunday.

Also, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said the best way to meet the demands of Syrians and to see democracy established in the Arab country is national dialogue.

In a Saturday meeting with the UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Munich, Salehi urged all states to work towards ending the conflict and preventing opposition groups from destroying the country's infrastructure.

In a separate meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Salehi outlined Iran's six-point plan for peace in Syria.

Salehi said the stability and security of Syria is linked to that of regional countries, stressing the need to prevent growth of extremism in Syria.

Mikati, for his part, described Iran's efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis as important and expressed hope that Salehi would visit Lebanon in the near future.

Salehi in a meeting with Head of the Syrian National Coalition Sheikh Ahmad Maaz Al-Khatib appreciated him for his readiness to hold talks with the Syrian government, calling it "a positive step ahead".

"Resolving the Syrian issue takes place in the form of a process through which action should be taken to resolve the problems," he added at the meeting which took place at Salehi's residence in Munich.

Al-Khatib, for his part, referred to certain political differences in Syria, said, "We are all brothers in faith", implying that the problems in Syria should be seen as a family problem which needs to be solved only by the family members.

In December 2012, Iran unveiled the details of the six-point plan to resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria, which calls for an immediate end to all violence.

The plan calls for sending humanitarian aid to Syrians following the end of all conflicts, lifting all economic sanctions imposed against the country, and facilitating the return of displaced Syrians.

It also urges talks between the Syrian government and the representatives of all Syrian groups in order to form a national reconciliation committee.
