Azerbaijan's Migration Code will take effect from August 1, head of the parliament's committee in charge of legal policy, Ali Huseynli, said at a special session of the Milli Majlis on July 2.

The Azerbaijani parliament passed the Migration Code in the third reading at its extraordinary session on June 13.

"Previously it was assumed that the Code would come into effect on June 1," Huseynli said. "There were proposals to postpone that date till September 1. However, since all documents necessary for the Code to be enforced have been prepared, it will go into effect from August 1."

The parliament passed a draft law on approving the Migration Code and its enforcement at a parliamentary meeting on July 2.

In June, State Migration Service chief Firudin Nabiyev said migrants will not encounter any difficulties after changes in the domestic legislation.

"The adopted Migration Code has many innovations and supplements," Nabiyev said. "The new Code simplified processes, and they [migrants] are provided with considerable benefits."

The State Migration Service detected 608 foreigners violating migration rules of the country last week. Also, 12,829 people were granted residence registration.

According to the legislative amendments, the right of foreigners and stateless persons who were evicted from Azerbaijan by administrative deportation to re-enter the country is limited over the period of one to five years.

The Code sets standards for public policy on migration, regulation of the migration processes, as well as rules on the legal status of foreign nationals and persons without citizenship in Azerbaijan.

The final version of the migration bill reflected such issues as the study of the Azerbaijani language by foreign citizens permanently residing in Azerbaijan and granting citizenship to foreigners who invested hefty funds in the country's economy, as well as the citizenship of people living outside the country and the issue of simplifying registration.
