Holcim aids environmental protection by recycling paper

By Aynur Jafarova

Employees of Holcim Azerbaijan -- the largest cement manufacturer and a leading company in the country -- started in April the collection and submission of waste paper at the plant and the city office for recycling by a local company.

The company says that according to international experience, an average person uses around 50 kg of paper per year. The paper recycling process allows significantly reducing the negative impact on the environment and ensuring more efficient use of natural resources.

Papermaking is more power-intensive in comparison with glass or steel production. Thus, recycling one ton of paper can save 15 big trees or up to 3 tons of wood, 25 tons of water, 238 liters of oil and 4,100 KW/h of electricity.

Overall, Holcim Azerbaijan is a one of the leading companies on promoting sustainable development and supporting environmental protection.

As part of efforts on efficient use and restoring natural resources, maintaining the ecological balance of the Garadagh district of Azerbaijan is in line with the values embraced by Holcim.

Earlier, the company celebrated its centennial with 'planting trees and greening the area' volunteering action in the Garadagh district. 150 employees planted over 450 trees to contribute to the expansion of greenery in this district. The new area will be further enlarged with additional trees in coming years.

Holcim operates in more than 70 countries and employs more than 80,000 employees. Holcim is a leading supplier of cement, aggregates such as crushed stone, gravel and sand and ready-mix concrete and asphalt.

It produces cement in full compliance with the set requirements while minimizing impact on the environment and the surrounding community with a commitment to promote best practices in the industry.

Holcim Azerbaijan effectively uses natural resources, minimizes and recycles waste, reduces energy consumption and cuts harmful emissions.

Since 1999, Holcim has been a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), which shares the commitment for economic growth, ecological balance and social progress. Holcim initiated Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) in 2000, in order to help the cement industry to address the challenges of sustainable development.
