Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has called on Islamic governments to exert political and economic pressure on Myanmar’s government to make it stop a deadly crackdown on minority Rohingya Muslims in the Southeast Asian country, the leader’s official website reported.

Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei said that the Islamic Republic must take clear stances against oppressions taking place in any place around the globe.

He further slammed the government of Myanmar over the situation of Rohingya Muslims there and said the crisis in Myanmar is a political issue and should not be reduced to a religious conflict between Muslims and Buddhists.

The supreme leader also lashed out the international and human rights organizations over their silence regarding the situation of Muslims in Myanmar.

Urging the Islamic countries to take measures against the government of Myanmar, he said that practical measures don’t mean military meddling.

“Practical measures don’t mean military deployments. The Muslim governments must step up political and economic pressure on Myanmar’s government,” Khamenei said in a message.
