Iran’s thermal power generation jumps

The output of Iran's thermal power plants has increased by 70 percent from 2002 to 2012.

The country's thermal power plants generated 239.8 terawatt hours in 2012 compared to 133.7 terawatt hours in 2002, Shana news agency reported.

The efficiency of the thermal power plants has been improved by 0.4 percent, reaching 37.2 percent in 2012.

Majid Salehi, managing director of Iran's Power Industry Development Organization, earlier said that Iran has put 12 new thermal power plants into operation since September last year.

Six thermal power plants have been established by the private sector. "The 12 power plants have a total power generation capacity of 1934 megawatts," he added.

Thermal power plants accounted for 88,543 gigawatt hours of the total electricity generated so far.

Power generation capacity in Iran has grown by seven percent annually during the past 10 years. The figure has averaged 3.5 percent in the world.

Currently, Iran is the biggest electricity producer in the Middle East.
