Sentence to Georgian ex-defense minister to be pronounced today

Georgian former Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaia is to be sentenced on October 28. According to the lawyer, Malkhaz Velidzhanashvili, hearings on the case of Akhalaia are scheduled for today.

The sentence will be pronounced on the case of what is regarded as a prison riot.

Bacho Akhalaia, the former head of the Department of Corrections, a former Defense Minister and former Interior Minister, who left the country before the parliamentary elections in October 2012, returned on November 5 and two days later he was arrested. Akhalaia was charged with three criminal cases relating to the period of his holding different posts.

Akhalaia was found not guilty in the case regarding the bullying of soldiers, whereas the review of one more case, which pertains to what is termed as bullying the staff members of the Georgian Interior Ministry special forces when Akhalaia held the post of Interior Minister, was completed two months ago, but the verdict has not been announced yet.

Another charge was brought against Akhalaia last week, dealing with connivance of a prisoner in the case of Sandro Girgvliani's murder.

The prosecution charges that Akhalaia created favorable conditions for those implicated in the murder, abusing his power. On October 26, the court ordered him held in detention for two months as a measure of restraint.
