U.S., rebels welcome Russian remarks on fate of Assad
Syria's rebel leadership and the United States have welcomed a
Russian official's remarks doubting the future of Syrian President
Bashar al-Assad, Radio Liberty reported.
Mikhail Bogdanov, a deputy foreign minister and the Kremlin's
special envoy for Middle East affairs, conceded on December 13 that
Assad's opponents could win the 20-month-old conflict.
The U.S. State Department credited Russia with "finally waking up
to the reality and acknowledging the regime's days are
numbered."
Rebel political leader Mouaz al-Khatib said he believed Russia was
looking for ways out of its support for a lost cause.
Russia has blocked UN efforts to press Assad to step down.
Meanwhile, the British-based Syrian Observatory said warplanes
bombed rebel-held eastern suburbs of Damascus on December 13, while
artillery hit Daraya and Moadamiyeh.
