Olympic medallists top Portugal's Baku 2015 team

Olympic medallists Emanuel Silva and Silva Fernando Pimenta topped Portugal's team for Baku 2015.

Silva and Pimenta, who teamed up for Canoe Sprint silver in K2 1000m at London 2012, were among 15 past Olympians named by the Portugal Olympic committee COP to the 100-member team for the Baku 2015 European Games.

Judoka Telma Monteiro has appeared at three Olympics and is a four-time European champion and four-time world silver medallist. Table Tennis players Marcos Freitas and Tiago Apolonia as well Trampoline artist Ana Rente all competed in the last two Olympics while 50-year-old Angola-born shooter Joao Costa has represented Portugal in the last four Olympic Games.

Of the other eight past Olympians, only Hugo Passos did not appear at London 2012 as the wrestler competed at Athens 2004. The London 2012 Olympians who will be appearing at Baku 2015 are Joao Silva (Triathlon), David Rosa (Cycling BMX), Diogo Ganchinho (Trampoline), Joana Ramos, Yahima Ramirez (both Judo), Joao Monteiro (Table Tennis), Joana Castelao (Shooting), Baku 2015 reported.

Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
