Kazakhstan launches 2nd earth observation satellite into orbit

Kazakhstan's second earth observation satellite KazEOSat-2 was successfully launched into orbit, Kazakh Space Agency reported on June 20.

"The launch of Kazakhstan's second earth observation satellite was held on June 20 at 1:11 Astana time from Yasniy launch base in the Orenburg region of Russia," the agency said.

KazEOSat-2 was launched by a Dnepr booster, designed on the basis of intercontinental ballistic missile RS-20.

KazEOSat-2 with spatial resolution of 6.5 meters was manufactured by the British Surrey Satellite Technology Limited company, which is part of the largest French group Airbus Defense and Space.

The satellite is designed to provide the full range of remote sensing services to obtain images of the Kazakh territory, as well as other plots of land, including monitoring, prevention of natural disasters, conducting the land cadastre, mapping to ensure the defense and security of the country.

Kazakhstan successfully launched its first earth remote sensing satellite-KazEOSat-1 into orbit from the French Guiana Space Center on April 30.

Kazakhstan was the first post-Soviet country after Russia which launched its own space satellite. KazSat was launched in June 2006, and the second Kazakh space satellite was launched in July 2011. KazSat-2 operates in the normal mode, provides services to 11 Kazakh operators, and gets over $2 billion tenge (about $11 millions) for its services.
