Turkmenistan, UN to discuss sustainable development goals implementation

By Abdul Kerimkhanov

A meeting was held in the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan within the framework of a round table to discuss the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The event was attended by representatives of ministries and sectoral departments of Turkmenistan, heads of agencies and agencies of the UN in Turkmenistan.

Current year laid the foundation for the implementation of 148 of the 169 SDG objectives to be achieved by Turkmenistan in the medium term in three key strategic areas - the economy, the social sphere and the field of environmental safety, the report said.

Elena Panova, the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, drew attention to the fact that Turkmenistan was one of the first countries in the region to determine sustainable development priorities for itself over the next 15 years.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs of Turkmenistan signed a memorandum of understanding on joint cooperation in the mobilization of development financing to achieve the SDGs in Turkmenistan in June 2018.

The SDG is complex and indivisible and balances all components of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental.

This implies universal elimination of poverty in all its forms, ensuring food security, quality education, gender equality, rational use of water resources, taking urgent measures to combat climate change and its consequences, preserving the oceans, seas and marine resources, etc.

Following the global adoption of the SDGs, the UN System in Turkmenistan together with the Government agreed on a 3-stage process to roll-out SDGs. It included 17 days of consultations, with relevant ministries to identify what SD goals, targets and indicators to be adopted for implementation in Turkmenistan.

The Government of Turkmenistan formally adopted a list of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 148 targets and 187 indicators to be implemented over the next 15 years on September 20, 2016.

The Government of Turkmenistan has also integrated the reference to the Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goals into its main national development strategy - the National Programme of the President of Turkmenistan on the Socio-economic Development for 2018-2024, adopted on October 9, 2017.
