UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in to discuss the situation on the Korean peninsula on September 18.

The meeting was held on the margins of the UN General Assembly meeting, the press service of the UN Secretary General reported.

“The Secretary-General and the President exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula. They agreed on the importance of working towards a peaceful diplomatic solution, as well as for Member States to comply fully with relevant Security Council resolutions,” the message said.

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously imposed a set of sanctions against North Korea on September 11 over the country’s hydrogen bomb test which was conducted on September 3.

These sanctions included limits on import of crude oil and oil products, a ban on textile exports and new visas for North Korean oversees workers.

However, North Korea tested another missile on September 15 in response to the latest set of sanctions imposed by the UN.

The missile blasted off from near the Sunan International Airport north of Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, and flew about 2,300 miles directly east, flying over northern Japan and falling into the Pacific Ocean, according to the South Korean military.

On September 15, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting over another missile launch by North Korea, which took place only four days after the adoption of Resolution 2375. The participants of the meeting adopted a joint statement that condemned the North Korean leadership’s provocative steps and stressed the need to fully comply with all sanctions imposed on the country.

The latest missile test showed that sanctions do not prove to be effective and international attempts to freeze Kim Jong-un’s missile program remain fruitless.

The UN Security Council is expected to hold another ministerial meeting to discuss the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction on September 21.
