Uzbek president-elect takes Oath of Office [UPDATE]

Tashkent hosted the inauguration ceremony of Uzbek President-elect Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Trend’s correspondent reported from the ceremony.

Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Uzbekistan Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov at a joint meeting of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate - upper and lower houses of the Uzbek Parliament, congratulated Mirziyoyev on his being elected the country’s president.

The Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev took the Oath of Allegiance to the people of the country.

Members of the government of Uzbekistan and the CEC, heads of ministries and departments, as well as heads of diplomatic missions of foreign states and international organizations accredited in the country took part in the inauguration ceremony.

More than 15.9 million voters, or 88.61 percent of all voters who participated in the voting, cast their ballots for Mirziyoyev.

The country held early presidential election on December 4 in connection with the death of the first Uzbek President Islam Karimov, who passed away after suffering a stroke on September 2.

The new Uzbek president called building democratic dynamically developing society, improving the efficiency of democratic reforms the most important tasks on the way of Uzbekistan’s further development.

Mirziyoyev made the remarks at a joint meeting of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate - upper and lower houses of the Uzbek Parliament, where he was sworn in and took office as president of Uzbekistan.

He stressed that the main goal for him is to continue large scale reforms implemented under the leadership of first Uzbek President Islam Karimov.

Mirziyoyev noted that he attaches great importance to the development of private entrepreneurship, reduction of the level of state presence in the Uzbek economy.

The new Uzbek president also stressed the need to evaluate the work of state bodies of different levels according to the effectiveness of their interaction with the population, and so that heads of state power report directly to the people.

“We are open to further development of cooperation with foreign countries and companies, and we are willing to create new, broader conditions and possibilities for this,” he said.

Meanwhile, Uzbek Deputy Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov was appointed prime minister during a joint session of the Uzbek Parliament’s Senate and Legislative Chamber on December 14.

The candidacy of a prime minister nominee is considered approved if it garners more than half of the votes of the members of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate of the Uzbek Parliament.
