Tbilisi, Rome eye expansion of cooperation

Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni and President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili discussed the enhancement of bilateral relations between Georgia and Italy during a meeting in Tbilisi on November 7.

The sides have also discussed the political and economic issues and the prospects of strengthening cooperation between Georgia and Italy in the fields of education, science, and culture, the Presidential Administration of Georgia reported.

The importance of Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic aspiration and the steps taken in this direction, both in the country and in the entire region, were highlighted.

The president thanked Gentiloni for his firm support of Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-recognition policy, and visa liberalization process.

Gentiloni arrived in Georgia on November 6, where he held a number of bilateral meetings at the highest level. The minister is planning to visit Azerbaijan and Armenia after Georgia.

Italy and Georgia established diplomatic relations on May 11, 1992.

The first Georgian-Italian Business Forum was held in Tbilisi on November 29-30, 2004 and this was a good beginning for activating of bilateral economic cooperation.

The trade turnover between Georgia and Italy, according to Geostat is $131 million (3.2% share of total turnover with the EU)
