The Azerbaijan National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (CSF) has appealed to the world community in connection with the deaths of Azerbaijani journalists and other innocent people as a result of Armenia's refusal to provide maps of mined territories, despite numerous respective appeals, Trend reports on June 5.

The Azerbaijan National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (CSF), which unites 71 non-governmental organizations, appealing to the world community, international organizations, called on them to condemn Armenia for not providing maps of mined territories and to convince official Yerevan to fulfill its obligations in accordance with the international law.

“We were deeply shocked by the news that on June 4 a vehicle carrying employees of television channels and news agencies was blown up on a mine and as a result, three people were killed, including two Azerbaijani journalists and four more people were hospitalized with various injuries," the statement said.

"During the first Karabakh war, several journalists also fell victims to the Armenian terror. During the second Karabakh war, Armenian terrorists repeatedly opened fire on journalists performing their professional duties, as a result of which there were injuries among the media representatives. Unfortunately, despite the fact that several months have passed since the end of the war, the terror from the Armenian side continues, and representatives of the media are dying today. The Azerbaijani National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum considers the deaths of Azerbaijani citizens in the territories liberated from occupation, which are contaminated with mines and other explosive devices installed by Armenia, as terror directed against international law, humanity and peace.

From the end of the war in November 2020 to the present day over 100 civilians and military personnel were killed by mines. After the war, Azerbaijan repeatedly called on the Armenian leadership to provide maps of mined territories. Armenia still does not provide maps of mined areas in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan, which is a violation of obligations under international humanitarian law, is a war crime. In addition, the mining of settlements, areas along rivers, near intersections and cemeteries is a violation of the Geneva Convention on Mine Action of 1949 and Additional Protocol I.

The Azerbaijani national platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum condemns this approach of Armenia, which endangers civilians, and also unequivocally prevents the start of reconstruction work in the liberated territories, prevents ensuring lasting peace in the country and the region, and prevents the return of more than one million internally displaced persons to their homes. We call for mobilization of efforts to ensure a safe and peaceful situation in the region. Saving lives and accelerating post-conflict recovery and reconstruction are essential for lasting peace in the region.

Addressing the world community and international organizations, we urge to condemn Armenia for not providing maps of mined territories and to convince official Yerevan to fulfill its obligations in accordance with the norms of law," the statement says.
