An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit an area in Azerbaijan's Imishli region on approximately 08:47 (local Baku time, GMT+4), Azerbaijan's Seismology Center told Trend.

The earthquake damaged homes, cracks were recorded on some homes and catering facilities. No casualities were reported.

The Center announced those aftershocks are still being observed in Imishli. "It is normal to have tremors. The energy has to discharge,” the Center said.

Residents are concerned about strong earthquakes but the Center sees them as a far-off possibility. The Center explained it with the fact that the area is not seismic one.

"After this quake, there were recorded series of aftershocks, and weak aftershocks will continue throughout the day. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.6 points on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 25 kilometers, which explains its small consequences. There are no grounds for concern,” said Gurban Yetirmishli, director General of the Republican Center of Seismic Service of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).

The earthquake was felt slightly in Mingachevir the first deputy head of the Mingachevir regional executive power, Ilham Ismayilov, told Trend.

No damage or causalities were reported. "Most of the residents did not even feel the tremors," - said Ismayilov

First deputy head of the Goranboy regional executive power, Elchin Jahangirov informed that earthquake was felt strongly enough in his region.

“A relevant commission was set up immediately, which conducted inspection of buildings in the city,” he said adding that no damage was recorded.

Meanwhile, the earthquake was also felt in Iran, where at least one person died from injuries sustained, in the city of Parsabad.

Oil pumping through the Baku-Novorossiysk pipeline is currently suspended due to the need to conduct a survey on the pipeline after the morning quake in Azerbaijan, Igor Demin, Transneft president's advisor told RIA Novosti.

"A survey is being conducted on the main pipeline Baku-Novorossiysk to check the effects of the morning earthquake with an epicenter in Imishli region of Azerbaijan. The pumping suspended,” he said.

Azerbaijan’s SOCAR announced that it continues to pump oil via the Baku-Novorossiysk pipeline in accordance with the schedule, Day.Az reports with reference to Trend.

"Pumping of the August volumes began this morning, and so far we have not received information about its suspension. Maybe at some stage of the transportation there maybe pauses, but at the moment pumping is running normally. We have not received any notes from "Transneft",” the company said.

SOCAR will pump 170,000 tons of oil via the pipeline in August 2016 under the plan.
