Presidential aide: Azerbaijan army continues to liberate occupied territories

By Akbar Mammadov

Presidential Aide, Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Hikmat Hajiyev has said that the Azerbaijani army continues to liberate the Azerbaijani territories that have been under Armenian occupation for around 30 years.

Hajiyev made the remarks while addressing a press briefing on September 27 the day when Azerbaijan started a counter-attack in response to Armenian attack along the entire line of contact, shelling Azerbaijani servicemen and civilians.

“The Azerbaijani armed forces continue to liberate the occupied territories and inflict heavy blows to the Armenian armed forces,” Hajiyev noted.

He pointed out that the Azerbaijani armed forces act guided by international humanitarian law and not aiming at civilian objects, noting that at the same time the Armenian armed forces are trying to target civilian objects.

Hajiyev said that Armenia has been pursuing a policy of aggression against Azerbaijan for more than 30 years, and today Yerevan receives a worthy rebuff.

The presidential aide also emphasized that the Azerbaijani army achieved a great strategic advantage by liberation of the Murov peak of the Murovdag mountain range in the direction of Goranboy district of the front as a result of the military operation.

Hajiyev added that the Armenian armed forces suffered heavy losses.

“The public will be additionally informed about the development of the situation."

As a result of the operation, the Vardenis-Agdere military road, connecting the occupied territories of Azerbaijan with Armenia, was taken under visual control and firing points of small arms and artillery installations were also controlled. The military advantage makes it possible to stop the supply of military cargo along the route from Armenia to Kalbajar and Agdere districts.

“The Armenian armed forces have spread misinformation that, allegedly, battles are taking place on the border. This is an absolute lie, Azerbaijan is working to liberate its lands from the occupation," Hajiyev stressed.

Azerbaijan and Armenia are locked in a conflict over Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh breakaway region, which along with seven adjacent regions was occupied by Armenian forces in a war in the early 1990s. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and around one million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities.
