Iran eyes broader ties with Azerbaijan

By Sara Rajabova

Tehran has voiced strong commitment to develop the relations with its historic neighbor Baku.

Mahmoud Vaezi, the Iranian Communications and Information Technology minister has said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has given all necessary instructions to develop the relations and expressed his country's desire to establish the multilateral cooperation with Azerbaijan.

Vaezi, who also co-chairs the Azerbaijan-Iran Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Cooperation, made the remark during a meeting with Azerbaijani Minister of Economy and Industry Shahin Mustafayev in Tehran on August 4, Trend reported.

He said the Azerbaijani and Iranian presidents support the development of political, economic and cultural relations between the two countries.

Azerbaijani delegation’s visit to Iran is clear evidence that no development taking place in the world has any effect on the two countries’ relations, Vaezi said.

Azerbaijan and Iran have had diplomatic relations since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991 and diplomatic relations between the two countries were reestablished in 1992.

Currently, the two countries are focused on expanding their economic ties in various fields, including industry, agriculture, energy, alternative energy, and transportation.
