Environmental issues priority for Kazakhstan, official says

The protection of environment and ecology is priority for Kazakhstan in further oil production, deputy mayor of the Atyrau region Gumar Dusenbayev said at the opening of the third International Oil and Gas Conference 'The Caspian Sea shelf development' on June 19.

"It is important that these two tasks are in balance," he noted. "Our region opens new opportunities for implementation of new technologies which will allow complying the balance of these tasks."

According to Dusenbayev, currently 34 projects worth 1.4 trillion tenge are being implemented in the Atyrau region of Kazakhstan.

Most part of them will be allocated to the oil and gas projects, he said.

Earlier it was reported that Kazakhstan plans to establish an environmental fund. The Environmental Fund will be aimed at the real protection of the environment of the country.

Atyrau hosted the third International Oil and Gas Conference 'The Caspian Sea shelf development' on June 19 - 20.

The conference organized by Kazakhstan's KazEnergy Association was attended by the heads and representatives of the largest oil and gas operators, international organizations and public authorities of Kazakhstan and Russia, leading experts of this sector.

The participants discussed recent achievements in the development of oil and gas industry in the Caspian shelf, the issues of environmental safety and technological innovations.

Issues of ecological safety of the Caspian shelf development, technological innovations and the regional projects were on the agenda of the two-day conference.

Much attention was paid to the prospects of geological exploration in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea.
