Georgian Defence Minister Irakli Alasania met with his Afghan counterpart Bismillah Khan Mohammadi at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Friday.

The defence ministers of the two countries discussed the ISAF peacekeeping mission and the situation in Afghanistan, Georgian Defence Ministry told Trend news agency on Friday.

The parties also discussed the transfer of responsibility for security in the country to the Afghan side. The talks also touched on assistance and training of Afghan security forces after completion of the peacekeeping mission.

Alasania noted that the Georgian peacekeepers will remain in Afghanistan until the end of the mission and continue to assist the Afghan side after 2014.

"We talked about the use of Georgia's military potential to train Afghan security forces. We offered our training opportunities in Georgia and discussed Georgia's participation in ensuring further security in Afghanistan. The discussion of this matter will be continued tomorrow. The meeting was very fruitful. We have already started cooperation in this direction and will soon reach an agreement on specific issues," Alasania said.

Minister Mohammadi expressed his pleasure with the meeting and thanked the Georgian government for its support. "This has been provided for many years and is very important to us. Our future plans include the arrival of the Afghan military servicemen in Georgia. They will be trained in your country," he said.
