The territory and property of the former Gabala radar station has been taken from the control of the Armed Forces and given to the relevant state bodies by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers.

The agreement on the status, principles and operating conditions of the Gabala radar station between the governments of Azerbaijan and Russia expired on December 9, 2012, with the latter sending a note halting the operation of the radar station on December 10.

"The commission established at the order of Cabinet of Ministers, dated December 11, 2012, in this connection has completed its work," Defense Ministry's spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Vagif Dergahli said.

"The territory and property of the former radar station hence will be used by the relevant bodies," he added.

The Gabala radar station located in northwest Azerbaijan was built during the Soviet period as one of the most important elements of the USSR's missile defense system. After Azerbaijan gained independence the radar station became the country's property and Russia continued to use it.
