School for girls named after Azeri first lady opens in Pakistan

The opening ceremony of a school for girls constructed by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in 2007 and rebuilt in 2012 was held on Wednesday in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

The school was named after Azerbaijani First Lady, Heydar Aliyev Foundation President Mehriban Aliyeva.

The ceremony was attended by Pakistani ministers of education and of information and broadcasting, secretary for emergency situations, a Pakistani parliament member, and the Azerbaijani ambassador to Pakistan.

After the opening ceremony, participants familiarized themselves with the school area, classrooms, a library and a laboratory, and expressed their satisfaction.

Ambassador Dashgin Shikarov informed the participants about the large-scale projects implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation president in Azerbaijan and Pakistan, as well as in other countries.

The ambassador also said that monthly scholarships of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation have been allocated to five excelling students of the school.

Pakistani Education Minister Sadiq Dar said that Azerbaijan was among the first countries which helped Pakistan after the earthquake in 2005.

He said a modern school for 500 students was built instead of a school for 150 pupils, which was destroyed during the natural disaster.

Sadiq Dar thanked Mehriban Aliyeva for her efforts and told the participants of the ceremony that Pakistani state bodies appreciated the Azerbaijani first lady's concern for the Pakistani people, and in particular children, and decided to name the school in honor of Mehriban Aliyeva.

All students received school supplies and books published by the embassy in Islamabad.
