Baku, Astana mull military cooperation

Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have exchanged views on the prospects of the military cooperation between the two countries, the Azerbaijani defense ministry said.

Azerbaijani Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov met with Saken Zhasuzakov, the deputy Defense Minister of Kazakhstan and the head of the General Staff of Armed Forces Colonel-General on July 15.

Expressing satisfaction with the traditional friendship and brotherly relations between the two countries, the sides discussed joint activities serving to strengthen cooperation and mutual trust in military training and technology, as well as issues of regional security.

Touching upon political-military trends in the region, Hasanov stressed that the occupied territories are still under Armenian invasion and the Azerbaijani people, who have lost their patience, demand the liberation of their lands.

He also stressed that the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict poses a threat to stability in the region. He noted the importance of resolving the conflict within the framework of the norms and principles of international law.

Zhasuzakov, for his part, noted the high-level development of the military, the defense industry in Azerbaijan, adding that his country will benefit from this experience.

The visit of the Kazakh delegation led by Zhassuzakov was aimed to sign a protocol of intent on cooperation between headquarters of the armed forces of the two brotherly countries.

The protocol was signed by First Deputy Defense Minister and Chief of General Staff of Azerbaijani Armed Forces Colonel General Najmaddin Sadigov and by Zhassuzakov on behalf of Kazakhstan.

Sadigov and Zhassuzakov held a one-on-one meeting, which then followed by the expanded meeting.

The sides discussed military cooperation and the exchange of experiences by the armed forces of the two sides, as well as security issues in the Caspian Sea Basin and issues of mutual interest.

The delegation was also received by Azerbaijan`s Defense Industry Minister Yavar Jamalov, who briefed the visitors on Azerbaijan’s defense industry.

They discussed prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in defense industry.

Employees from the Kazakh Embassy to Azerbaijan also attended the meeting.

The visit of Kazakh delegation to Azerbaijan wrapped up on July 15.
