Washington vows commitment to continue co-op with Baku
Elections are critical part of any well-functioning democracy and the US is paying close attention to preparations for Azerbaijan’s upcoming parliamentary elections, said Robert Cekuta, the US ambassador to Azerbaijan.
“Regardless of the make-up of the next Azerbaijani parliament, the United States will remain committed to our bilateral cooperation toward achieving the brightest possible future for Azerbaijan,” he told Trend on October 29.
The ambassador further said he hopes that newly elected representatives in the parliament will share that commitment as well.
The country will hold elections to the supreme legislative body on November 1. On this day roughly 5.2 million Azerbaijani citizens, who enjoy the right to vote, will come to polling stations to express their constitutional right to elect their representatives to the parliament.
This year, 769 candidates - the representatives of 15 political
parties and one bloc of parties, which represents seven parties,
will compete for seats in Azerbaijan's Parliament.
Earlier, Azerbaijan’s Central Election Commission accredited 465
observers from 36 international structures to observe the Nov. 1
election. Missions representing 53 countries will also be involved
in the election observation.
