Moscow contributing to successful conclusion of Iranian nuclear talks
Moscow sees the talks for settlement of the situation around
Iran’s nuclear program as constructive and contributes to their
successful and timely completion, RIA Novosti quoted the Russian
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on March 2.
Lavrov highlighted “a constructive course of talks to settle the
situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program” among the
“encouraging factors” in the context of strengthening the Treaty on
the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
“We, in every possible way, contribute to their successful and
timely completion, achieving agreements that will be firmly based
on NPT’s principles and the best practices of IAEA [International
Atomic Energy Agency],” said Lavrov, addressing the Conference on
Disarmament held in Geneva, Switzerland on March 2.
The US and its Western allies suspect Iran of developing a nuclear weapon - something that Iran denies.
The talks between Iran and the P5+1 were extended until June 30, 2015 to reach a comprehensive nuclear agreement. However, the sides attempt to reach a political accord in March.
After the parties failed to meet the November 24, 2014 deadline they also extended the Geneva nuclear deal, which was signed in November 2013 for providing Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Tehran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities.
