Baku slams show trial of Azerbaijani hostages

By Mushvig Mehdiyev

The so-called "trial" held in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, as well as the verdicts issued against Azerbaijani hostages have no legal basis, said Hikmet Hajiyev, Acting Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry.

He made the statements in reaction to the Armenian media reports about the completion of the so-called "trial" over Azerbaijani hostages.

Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev were taken hostage by the Armenian armed forces when they were visiting the graves of their parents in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Hasan Hasanov, another hostage, was brutally killed in Armenia.

"Armenia is responsible for taking civilians hostage, using torture against them and organizing a show "trial" for them. It is a stark violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, the International Humanitarian Law, the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, as well as ignoring the obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” Hajiyev said.

Hajiyev noted that Armenia violates human rights grossly, systematically and massively.

“The international institutions and community must put pressure on Armenia to immediately release Asgarov and Guliyev. It also must deliver a report on the fate of more than 4,000 missing Azerbaijanis,” he said.

Hajiyev called on the international community to pay attention to the protection of the rights of more than one million Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced persons, deprived of their rights as a result of the Armenian aggression.

He said Azerbaijan will keep on working with the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmen and international organizations to release Asgarov and Guliyev.

Following the show trial, Dilgam Asgarov was sentenced to life imprisonment and Shahbaz Guliyev was imprisoned for 22 years.

Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, as well as displaced over one million Azerbaijanis as a result of its baseless claims to Azerbaijani lands that ended in war in the early 1990s.

Many international organizations, including the UN, recognized the Nagorno-Karabakh territory's belonging to Azerbaijan as a historical and legal part of its territories. The UN issued four resolutions to call on Armenia to end the illegal existence of its army in Azerbaijani lands and unconditionally withdraw from the Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions. Nonetheless, Armenia avoids implementing the resolutions to end the conflict in peace, ignoring to follow the principles of peace talks.
