Opposition party leader says won’t run for chairman
BAKU – The leader of Azerbaijan’s opposition Musavat party has said he will not submit his candidacy at the next elections of the party’s chairman, even if its bylaws are amended.
Isa Gambar told a press conference Wednesday that in 2001 he had, himself, offered to impose a two-term restriction on the Musavat chairman, and has no intention to defy his own proposal.
Gambar did not clearly answer a question as to whom he considers a deserving candidate for the post.
Touching on the developments that occurred in 2010, Gambar claimed that "the worst development" of the year was the November 7 parliamentary election, which the opposition claims was flawed, while the best one was Tuesday’s establishment of the Public Chamber by opposition parties, NGOs and civil society representatives.
