Two days left before public explosion in Armenia

Protests in Armenia are reaching the highest end as two days are left to the national referendum on the constitutional amendments, scheduled for December 6.

In the past two weeks, the opposition has significantly increased the already high turnover of struggle against the power of the proposed changes.

The constitutional reforms were approved by the Armenian National Assembly on October 5 despite several months of intense debate and political protests against them.

The rallies on the Liberty Square in Yerevan are held by New Armenia movement, which unites the Heritage party, Democratic Homeland and civil movements Arise, Armenia.

Although all the protesting organizations share a common line on the issue of constitutional changes and make a lot of effort to cancel them, they still demonstrate tactical differences. For example, the front New Armenia demands the resignation of the current government, while the front No is aimed solely at the failure of the referendum.

However, despite all the demands and disagreement of the Armenian citizens, the government stays blind and deaf, forcing people to accept the unwished changes. Corrupted and criminal regime in this poor post-Soviet country has a big and strong potential as it owns the entire “stolen” money of the country and surpasses every effort of free speech. And even the tense situation in the country and the crisis, shaking Armenia, cannot convince the government to stop.

People understand that the new constitution targets keeping Serzh Sargsyan in power. The incumbent president enjoys low rating in pubic and the protesters aim to prevent this to happen.

Despite a significant difference in resources of the officials and the opposition, the results of the referendum will play a decisive role in the country’s future political life. The bill can in particular become a prelude to a series of very serious problems for the ruling regime unless the people approve the changes.

The country is already sinking in protests, poverty, criminality and mass migration but the situation is only worsening while the country’s government has one and only target – to hold its power at any cost. The Armenian officials are not concerned about people’s well-being, because each their step indicates their indifference and disservice.
