Baku, OSCE mull situation on frontline

Azerbaijan’s defense minister and the representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe have discussed the recent development on the contact line of the Armenian-Azerbaijani troops.

Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov met with Andrzej Kasprzyk, OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Personal Representative on February 3, Defense Ministry reported.

The sides discussed the situation on the contact line, results of the OSCE monitoring, as well as exchanged views on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The Armenian armed forces have recently increased tension on the contact line of two countries troops with attempts to attack the Azerbaijani positions.

Armenian sabotage and reconnaissance groups attempted to attack the positions of the Azerbaijani army along the frontline and on the contact line between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops several times last week. However, the Armenian forces were forced to retreat after sustaining casualties.

The precarious cease-fire between Azerbaijan and Armenia was reached after a lengthy war that displaced over a million Azerbaijanis and has been in place between the two South Caucasus countries since 1994. Since the hostilities, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The UN Security Council has adopted four resolutions on Armenia's withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been enforced to this day.
