Baku familiarizes with Romanian defense industry capacity

Military-technical cooperation between Azerbaijan and Romania was on the agenda of Azerbaijani defense minister's visit to Bucharest.

Headed by Defense Minister Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov, the Azerbaijani delegation held a meeting with Romanian Economy Minister Constantin Nita on August 28, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said.

The sides discussed prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Romania in the military-technical sphere.

The Azerbaijani side was also informed about the opportunities of the Romanian companies in the defense industry. The broad opportunities of Azerbaijan and Romania were highlighted for the expansion of bilateral cooperation.

Earlier, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Hasanov met with Romanian Defense Minister Mircea Dusa and the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Valeriu Zgonea.

The sides discussed the main priorities and prospects of military cooperation between the two countries, and reached agreements in military-technical and military-educational spheres, as well as the fields of mountain exercises and training exchange.

The two-day visit of Azerbaijani delegation to Romania completed on August 28, the ministry said.

Azerbaijan and Romania have a long history of relations dating back to the 15th century.

Romania officially recognized Azerbaijan's independence on December 11, 1991, and the two countries established diplomatic relations on June 19, 1992. The countries have established embassies in their respective capitals.

While the two share good cooperation in multiple areas, the main focus of their cooperation has been trade and energy links, with trade delegations and frequent talks regarding the further development of such ties, and an increase in bilateral.

Romania has also been a strong advocate of Azerbaijan's future membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), pointing out the strategic importance of the country for trade and shipping, particularly with a view towards Afghanistan.
