European court fines Azeri govt over sentencing opposition reps

BAKU – The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has imposed fines totaling 40,000 euros on the Azerbaijani government based on the pleas by four opposition representatives arrested following the 2003 presidential election.

Arif Hajily and Panah Huseyn of Musavat party, the leader of Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP) Sardar Jalaloglu and newspaper editor Rauf Arifoglu were released in March 2005. They filed lawsuits to the European court alleging the government had violated the European convention’s clauses on the right to a fair trial and freedom of assembly. The ECtHR said the suits were similar in essence and simultaneously announced its rulings on all four cases.

The court claimed the conviction of the opposition representatives were unlawful, ordering 10,000 euro compensation for each of the plaintiffs.
