Criticism of Azeri courts ‘must be discussed’
BAKU – The criticism voiced by local and international organizations toward Azerbaijani courts must be seriously discussed, the chairman of the Azerbaijani Constitutional Court said.
"The number of complaints from Azerbaijan to the European Court is less than the number of complaints from other countries," said court chairman Farhad Abdullayev. "But this not mean that Azerbaijani courts always consider cases in accordance with the law. Any criticism must be the subject of serious discussions."
The European Court has made 30 decisions with regard to Azerbaijan since 2001 when the country joined the Council of Europe. The European Court receives on average 1,000 complaints from Azerbaijani citizens each year.
He said it is necessary to minimize the number of complaints related to the country's judicial system by correctly considering the claims of citizens in local courts.
The rights of citizens, as protected by the Constitution, are often violated due to poor legal literacy among the population and sometimes at the fault of officials, Abdullayev said.
He added that developing a clear mechanism to execute the law will significantly reduce such complaints.
