Jubilee meeting of CIS Interstate Council due in Baku

The next meeting of the CIS Interstate Council for Emergencies of Natural and Technogenic Character will be held in Baku on October 2-3.

The jubilee 30th meeting is planned to discuss the activities of the Council in 2016-2017 and measures to improve the cooperation among the CIS countries, a schedule of control checks of mutual notification of the CIS member states about emergency situations of natural and technogenic nature, Trend reported.

The Council also intends to consider the improvement of the legal framework for cooperation.

The Interstate Council for Emergencies of Natural and Technogenic Character was established on January 22, 1993, in accordance with the Agreement on Cooperation in the Sphere of Prevention and Elimination of Emergencies of Natural and Technogenic Character adopted by the Council of CIS Heads of Governments in Minsk, Belarus.

Moreover, Sochi will host a meeting of foreign ministers of the CIS countries on October 10-11.

The meeting is expected to discuss issues related to cooperation of the CIS countries in the legal sphere, the sphere of combating the legalization of proceeds obtained by criminal means, financing of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The meeting of the Foreign Ministers Council will also be of a preparatory nature for the summit of CIS heads of states, scheduled for October 11.

The Council of Foreign Ministers of the CIS countries is the main executive body of the CIS, which, on the basis of decisions of the Council of Heads of States, the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth, coordinates the foreign policy activities of member states, including their activities in international organizations, and organizes consultations on issues of world politics of mutual interest.

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is free association of sovereign states formed in 1991 by Russia and 11 other republics that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. The CIS’s functions are to coordinate its members’ policies regarding their economies, defense, immigration policies, environmental protection, and law enforcement.

The CIS united Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine. However, in 2008 Georgia withdrew its membership.
