Archaeological and written evidence has confirmed that the Hamanli village in Azerbaijan's Goranboy region, 317 km west of the capital Baku, was originally Hamidunya village, granted to Azerbaijani genius poet Nizami Ganjavi by the governor of Atabek state Muhammad Jahan Pehlevan, a leading Azerbaijani researcher has said.

According to the head of Ganja archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Arif Mammadov, the expedition conducted archaeological research in Hamanli, where many material culture samples, metal items, numismatic materials, and remains of public buildings, which were built mostly of bricks, were discovered.

Mammadov said that information that the village was presented to Nizami Ganjavi -- the 12th century greatest representative of the Eastern Renaissance whose creations played a great role in the development of Oriental arts -- is also reflected in his works.

"After the village was granted to Nizami by the order of Kyzyl Arslan, the five-kilometer-long waterline made from faience pipes was laid to the village. We have identified the location of this pipe system. Hamidullah Gazvini said that there was a spring called Shirin Bulag [sweet spring] in the Hamidunya village presented to Nizami Ganjavi.

"We located this spring. A cemetery of seven graves was located approximately 150 meters away from it. We were able to determine the location of the graves. The results of all the studies confirmed that Hamanli village is Hamidunya village, a gift to Nizami Ganjavi," Mammadov said.

Nizami Ganjavi represented the quintessence of world literature and philosophy in his immortal work Khamsa (The Five), via the aesthetic power of his art. Even now, at a time when science and technology are developing exponentially, mysticism remains a source of intense fascination, and it is impossible not to be amazed by the clear logic and consciousness reflected in the works of the outstanding poet.

Nizami's works have been translated into English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and other languages of the world; his life and creations were extensively researched. The unique manuscripts of his works are stored in well-known libraries and museums in many cities of the world, including Baku, Moscow and St. Petersburg, Tashkent, Tabriz, Tehran, Cairo, Istanbul, Delhi, London, and Paris.
